Meet our Trustees

Ian Adderley

Ian has served as chair, and a trustee, of the UK Society for Co-operative Studies since September 2015. His background is in law, having been called to the Bar in 2010, and he currently works on mutual society legislation for a public authority. Previously, Ian has been involved in the co-op movement both as a lay activist and as a member of staff working for Co-operatives Yorkshire and Humber.

Dan Crowe

Dan is an active co-operator and an Elected Member of the Co-op Group’s National Members’ Council. He served two terms as its first Vice-President for Co-operative Performance, Democratic Processes and Member Voice from 2015-19. He is a Council-appointed Trustee of the Co-op Foundation, the Group’s corporate charity and former Director of Co-ops UK, the network for Britain’s thousands of co-operatives.

Ruth Hall

Ruth is a third generation co-operator working herself for 15 years with The Co-operative Group. In 2016, she was elected to their National Members Council and sits on the Member Voice Committee. In 2019, she stood in the local elections as a Labour & Co-operative candidate. Ruth was elected as a trustee to UKSCS in 2018 and looks after our communications.

Gillian Lornegan

Gillian retired in 2019 after a career as a librarian for the Co-operative Union (now Co-operatives UK), the Co-operative College and the Co-operative Heritage Trust. Her working life involved the history and development of the co-operative movement, most recently as Librarian of the National Co-operative Archive. Gillian became involved with the UKSCS in the mid-1990s, using editorial skills gained at the Co-operative Union in her role as Deputy Editor (Production) of the Journal of Co-operative Studies. She is a chartered librarian, qualified archivist and Fellow of the Society of Indexers.

John Maddocks

John Maddocks is an accountant (ACCA) and researcher with over 30 years’ experience of working with and in charities, co-operatives, voluntary and community organisations. He has contributed to a number of publications, research papers, courses and workshops on related topics. John has been Treasurer of UKSCS for the past three years and is currently a full-time PhD student at Newcastle University, looking at accounting for social value.

Rory Ridley-Duff

In 2018, Rory became Professor of Cooperative Social Entrepreneurship at Sheffield Hallam University after establishing an MSc Co-operative and Social Enterprise Management and five years as Reader in Cooperative and Social Enterprise. His research programme on solidarity cooperatives led to the publication of the FairShares Model and he co-founded the FairShares Association in 2015. This is his second spell as a board member of the UKSCS during which he he co-chaired the 2017 and 2018 conferences.

Cilla Ross

Cilla became Vice Principal of the Co-operative College after a career in higher, labour and adult education, specialising as a historian and work sociologist. She has delivered programmes in Sri Lanka and East Africa on the informal economy and co-operatives and is now heading the College’s project to co-create the UK’s first Co-operative University. She has been a UKSCS trustee since 2015.
